The kids loved seeing the farm animals, and the owners were lovely and made us feel very welcome. Our family had a really enjoyable three-night stay in one of their cozy cottages, which had everything we needed. It’s well placed near Penistone and a couple of local pubs. We used the cottage as a base for walks at Kinder Scout and Chee Dale Stepping Stones, about an hour from each.

We booked two cottages for a three-night break and have just got home. The views were beautiful and the location fantastic. The cottages were lovely and homely, with everything we needed. Beds were made up with fresh linen, and there was a lovely homemade cake with tea, coffee and sugar waiting for us. Sally and her family are lovely and were on hand if we needed anything. Nothing was too much trouble. We really enjoyed our time there and highly recommend it to everyone. Thank you for a brilliant stay.

We were a 32-year-old couple with a husky, staying three nights and using the cottage as a base. We were out roughly 10am-4pm and again 6pm-8pm each day. The setting is lovely, with great views and easy access to walks. Langsett Reservoir is just a short distance away. It’s a small but functional one-bedroom cottage on a farm with three rental cottages. Unfortunately, a few things spoiled the stay. We checked in at 6pm, within the stated 2-10pm window, and the owner was rushing off to work. She said, “I’ve got to get to work. Here’s the cottage, here’s the keys.” We brushed it off, and there were homemade fairy buns, tea and coffee waiting in a tin, which was a lovely touch. The bigger issue was the small shared terrace between two cottages. The owner knocked and said the neighbour had complained that our dog being outside meant they couldn’t leave their house. He’d only have been on the terrace with the back door open and us in the lounge right beside him, so we were easy to reach. There was also apparently dog poo on the terrace that we hadn’t noticed before heading out. That’s completely unacceptable, and if it was our dog, we’re deeply embarrassed and take full responsibility. Still, it was surprising when the owner told us to “only use the front door,” effectively excluding us from the communal terrace. She said she was “trying to keep the peace,” which shocked us as we hadn’t realized there was any issue to resolve. I spoke directly with the neighbours because I didn’t see why this needed to go through a third party. They have a long-haired chihuahua and two cats inside their rental, and were nervous to open the door in case our dog ran in. I understand that concern with small animals, and although I wish they’d spoken to us themselves, it was good to clear the air and reach an understanding. This could have been a lovely review, but the complaint was handled very poorly and left us feeling deflated and unwelcome. There should be a pet policy for these cottages to prevent the same problem happening again. The cottage is a little dated, has limited kitchen equipment, and the wet-room shower has very little pressure. The power switch is temperamental too.

The farm owners were friendly, and it was lovely to see all the animals. The cottage was spacious, and we had a nice weekend there. It’s well located for the Pennaston Trail, which made for a lovely bike ride. The weather was poor on the second day, but Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield was only 20 minutes away. All in all, a nice weekend.

Peace and walking country are the main draw here, with miles of fields and a reservoir nearby. The cottages are tucked away, but the travel routes are good, and Sheffield and Barnsley are still within reasonable reach if you need to commute. A lovely spot for a quiet break.
