The house ale was full of flavour and nicely cold. I liked how relaxed the place felt, with locals and visitors sharing a warm, welcoming space. You can sit inside or head out to the garden for a bit of downtime.

The bed was comfortable, and they did provide fans, which helped in a very hot room at the top of the building. But it felt dated, and if you want a shower, bring your own towels. Getting ready to go out was a struggle: the mirror was screwed high on the wall, nowhere near the plugs, and there wasn’t a full-length mirror. Bring an extension lead if you need to use a hairdryer or straighteners. There was a TV, with lots of drill holes behind it, and the window wouldn’t open. Fine if you only need a bed, I suppose.

It used to be a lovely pub with great food and a fabulous garden. Now the place is filthy and grubby, both inside and along the street outside, with cigarette butts, rubbish and broken bottles. I haven’t seen anyone eating there in years, and I doubt it would pass a hygiene test. What a shame.

I came back after going out for food, since they don’t serve food, and went to bed. Then some bloke walked straight into my room while I was asleep, demanding payment. I was tired and had planned to pay in the morning, but having someone just come into the room like that was totally unacceptable. He wasn’t even staff, as far as I could tell, maybe the woman running the bar’s husband that night. I was down here for work, and this has to be the worst place I’ve ever stayed. The bloke was okay otherwise, sorry to say, but I’d avoid this place.

The fire alarm went off again at 5am, after already waking us during the night. No staff were on site to handle it, so another guest had to call the fire brigade. The room doors were locked between the rooms and the pub, and I tried the out-of-hours number four times without getting an answer. The owner eventually turned up, but didn’t apologise. The room was dated and dusty. £80 for a room only already felt a bit steep, and the lack of sleep and safety concerns made it much worse. Health and safety was seriously lacking. I’d avoid it at all costs. NOT HAPPY.
