Check-in was very accommodating even though we arrived exceptionally late, and checking out was simple. The place is easy to find on the main road, with convenient parking. Rooms are reached by stairs only, and as far as I could tell, there are no rooms on the first floor. There’s a shared kitchen for the rooms on the second floor. It looks like the rooms are being renovated gradually, so the furniture is a mix of old and new. The bathroom seemed recently updated with modern features like a new shower, though some finishing touches, such as a toilet paper holder, were missing. Bring your own adapter, as the outlets are for Great Britain and shavers only.

The service was pretty appalling. We asked for a later checkout, but nobody got back to us, and the rooms didn’t seem to have been tidied properly. The hotel had our booking dates wrong, so the cleaner was still in our room when we arrived on 1 January. She looked shocked and had to rush, which was a shame for her. Finding the entrance took a while, then we waited quite some time at reception before anyone noticed us. We were taken into an unappealing bar where old men stared at us, and the atmosphere wasn’t great. The man serving us was friendly enough, but only just. The place didn’t look appealing when we arrived, and it was very expensive too. We wouldn’t come back or recommend it.

We stayed for two nights while attending a wedding in Bathgate. The room was lovely and very clean, and the bar downstairs had a friendly feel.

There’s a nice kitchen area guests can use whenever they like, and the room was massive. The ensuite was excellent, and the decor was nice. I’ll stay again.
