We stayed for one night with our dog to surprise family nearby, and the room with its own bathroom was just right. Everyone came for a meal, with plenty of choice, good food and excellent service. It's a cosy, comfortable traditional pub. We'd happily stay again.

The landlord spent the night working tirelessly to fix a problem with the water supply to our room. That's a hands on publican who goes the extra mile, and we'll definitely return. We had a lovely two day stay. The bedrooms are modern and comfortable, while the bar and lounge keep the building's traditional character. Open fires were a welcome way to warm up in the blustery Cumbrian winter. The menu had a good selection of well cooked meals at reasonable prices.

We loved our two nights here. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and locals came into the bar too. Breakfast is made to order, with eggs and terrific bacon or fruit and cereal. The old building has plenty of quirks, while the guest rooms have been updated. The location worked well for Lowther Castle and Penrith, and there are two other pubs with great food a short distance away.

Darren and Susie have a great sense of humour, and the pub seemed to draw plenty of customers, locals included. Our room was warm and clean, with a great shower, a comfortable bed, and really nice upmarket tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Breakfast was great, and there's plenty of parking in a quiet location. We'd booked three nights. On our way up last Friday, Louise called to let us know they couldn't serve food that evening because of problems with the gas supply. I thought it was very courteous of her to tell us. When we arrived, one of the new owners, Darren, politely explained they'd taken over the place only a few days earlier. The room looked recently updated. I'd wholeheartedly recommend staying here, and we'll certainly be back.

After a long drive from the south West of England, this traditional pub is a welcome stop on our holidays in Scotland. We've used it overnight for years. It has avoided modern trendy pub bling, and evenings feel warm and inviting with travellers and locals alike. Staff are always friendly and helpful, the food is wholesome, the rates are reasonable and there are dog friendly rooms. It's a must for us.
