The breakfast was lovely, and I thought the restaurant staff were good. The rest of the stay was awful. Our first room was filthy, with hairs in the bathroom and toilet and food marks on the floor and walls. It looked nothing like the pictures. When I asked to change rooms, the man at reception suddenly seemed annoyed. He said there were no rooms, then told me to wait while he helped other guests. We had already been waiting over half an hour, and my two children were hungry and tired. Eventually we were given another room, but it was just as dirty, with hair, food on the carpet, broken switches, and a pull-out bed with springs sticking out. The bath was blocked and flooded too. It was late, so we ordered food and just got through the night. In the morning, we wanted to leave straight away. I dropped something and, when I picked it up, found a dirty sex toy on the floor. I felt sick and disgusted, especially with my two young children in the room. The woman who handled my complaint was kind, caring, and very apologetic. I'm still waiting for my refund, but I won't let it go until I get it. This place isn't four-star, more like two. The rooms don't match the photos, and I won't come back.

The pool was already full when I tried to take my eldest for a swim while settling the youngest for bed. There was a queue, and we were told we couldn't use it. With no air conditioning either, I ended up writing this review. Dinner the second night was another disappointment. The menu looked good and the food matched its description, but service slowed right down as more tables filled. We were nearly first in, with only two or three tables occupied at the start, but the staff seemed overwhelmed once it got busier. They stayed polite and were clearly working hard, so I don't blame them. After waiting so long with two small children, we gave up on dessert, which upset my wife. The first evening seemed fine, and the general cleanliness and reception staff were good. But the sofa bed was terrible, with such a thin mattress that I could feel the frame through it. I've seen this issue mentioned in other reviews too. I wouldn't return or recommend it.

Check-in was quick, and the staff were lovely. We had a roomy place with big windows looking out over the city, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The rain shower was a real treat too. Modern, stylish, and right in the centre. I'd happily give it five stars for a weekend away.

The central spot made it easy to get around and do different things. Staff were friendly and helpful, and our room was spacious and nice, though it could use some updating. The price felt fair for what we got. We had a very pleasant stay at Novotel Southampton.

The pool was lovely and warm, and there was a small play area for kids. The sofa bed wasn't the most comfortable, but we still had a great family stay. Breakfast was lovely too.
