Woodlands Lodge Hotel

Excellent value for money, and we had a lovely stay this weekend. Every staff member took an interest in the guests, recommending walking spots, showing interest in the dogs and making us feel welcome.

We were sadly disappointed with our overnight stay at Woodlands Lodge last Friday. I’d arranged the night away for my partner and me, and with the cost of living as it is, we spent a lot for one night, especially once dinner and breakfast were included. The basic amenities either didn’t work or weren’t available, and it didn’t feel worth what we paid. The room was cold when we arrived. After dinner we had to call down about the heating, and two of the three radiators never worked during our stay. The TV had no signal and didn’t work. Emergency works meant we heard drilling underneath us until after 10pm. We called reception and asked for it to stop, but it continued. We found that unacceptable, especially since staff hadn’t told us about the work. The food was okay, but some items weren’t available and we thought it was overpriced for what we wanted. Things we asked for were forgotten or not heard, including our request for the steak to be cooked to our preference. At breakfast we found a hair in one of my partner’s food items, which completely put us off. Communication was good before the stay, but after we messaged them with our feedback, we disappointingly haven’t heard back. I wouldn’t personally book again.

The water pressure and warmth were perfect, but the rooms were a bit dated and the TV was tiny and awkwardly placed. I’d only suggest staying if you have the money, which is normally £50 a night. I booked a basic room through Expedia and got a £15-per-night discount, but I immediately sensed they weren’t impressed with my booking. They tried to charge me £20 for a late checkout, then I found out in the information manual that it actually costs £10. At checkout they also tried to charge us another £10, saying we were in a premium room. We’d booked a basic room, so no. The hidden charges they tried to get from me felt outrageous, like they were trying to rip me off and make me pay what they thought the room was worth.

I found this place on Booking.com and booked a night after attending my auntie’s funeral. The room was good, with a lovely bathroom and shower, though the bed could have been more comfortable. I always miss my own bed. Breakfast the next morning was ample and nicely cooked. The staff were friendly and the location was lovely.
