The noise made it hard to sleep during my three-night work stay. I was in room 17 on the ground floor at the end of the main building, and each night around 9pm a deep, constant hum began and carried on all night. I could only guess it came from above, perhaps a bathroom extractor fan, since it started at different times. If you need sleep after work, I’d avoid room 17. I raised it with the two men at reception, but they were very nonchalant and just suggested claiming the room cost back instead of addressing the problem. I gave up after that. The Premier Plus rooms are upstairs, and it felt like Premier Inn would rather avoid upsetting those higher-paying guests at the expense of people on the ground floor. Truly shocking.

I was unexpectedly here for about nine nights after my husband was taken to nearby Southampton general hospital. The staff were warm and welcoming, and when I needed to extend at short notice without knowing how long I’d stay, they rearranged things so I could keep the same room. That was very kind and made a tough time easier. The desk is staffed 24 hours, which helped when I returned late from the hospital. The hotel is in a nice area and parking was easy even when it was full, with large work vans taking several spaces. It cost £5 a night, which seemed reasonable. Rooms were clean and fairly modern, and the free WiFi worked well. I used the premium WiFi for work, and that was handy too. There’s a Beefeater on site with pretty decent food, plus a big Sainsbury’s a few minutes’ drive away. Thank you to the friendly team.

Two rooms came at a good price, and the annex is more up to date. The main building and its rooms are nice, though they’re beginning to look a little tired, and some lights didn’t work. In the annex, 4G didn’t work and the free WiFi was useless. A wired coat hanger might have made a better aerial. If you need WiFi, look elsewhere, since another hotel can apparently offer free ultra-fast service. Hmm.

The room and service were lovely, and we had a good visit until 6:30am on Sunday. A delivery then made a huge racket in the car park, with metal clashing so loudly that even the soundproof windows couldn’t block it.

After my son’s operation at Southampton General, we needed somewhere calm, and the lovely service and clean room helped make an eventful 24 hours feel much more relaxing. When we needed to reach the train station the next day, the taxi number at reception quoted about £20 and a 50-minute wait. Rebecca at reception kindly called another company for us, which was cheaper and quicker. We don’t know Southampton or its taxi firms, so that help meant a lot. A big thank you to Rebecca. We’ll definitely stay here again.
