The Star Hotel

The two rooms I booked were rundown, dirty, and in really poor condition. The shower was moldy, and there was dried yogurt or something on a teaspoon. We slept fully clothed on top of the bed. I wasn't expecting luxury from a 3-star place, but this was awful. It was too late to book anywhere else when we arrived, so we just put up with it. We got no sleep and it ruined the first day of our holiday. We left as early as we could the next morning. I don't know how they're still open. Avoid.

The location worked really well for restaurants, bars, and Mayflower Park, where we were exhibiting. I paid £57 for a double room, including breakfast for two adults. There was a cooked breakfast buffet, plus cereal, yogurts, and some fruit. The front bar had very reasonably priced drinks and cocktails. We ran out of time to try them, but it all seemed very good value. You get what you pay for: the place is dated, though it has a cool feel.

The staff at The Star Hotel were polite, friendly, professional, and happy to help. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a nice bed and linen, plus tea and coffee facilities. Breakfast was fantastic, with cereal, yogurts, fruit juice, and a full English, with toast, tea, or coffee. It's fantastic value for money. The Star Hotel is perfectly placed for Southampton city centre and its many shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars. Thank you, Star Hotel.

We had a family room that was big and light, but the bed and pillows were terribly uncomfortable. The shower was small, though it had good pressure, and the place wasn't very clean. The bedrooms badly need some TLC. Breakfast was very basic, with next to nothing for anyone who doesn't like an English breakfast. For what it was, the price felt very expensive. I wouldn't go back.
