Skylark Hotel

The staff were pleasant, and the rooms were spacious, with great showers and a good-sized bathroom. We had a good stay overall. Just be aware that there's a small airport next door, so planes fly in now and then. We weren't told about that before booking.

Breakfast was good value, £5 for a full English and continental buffet, and the stay cost less than the big chain hotels. Our room was very clean and spacious, with a comfortable bed, plenty of towels and a dressing gown. Staff were friendly and helpful. Since my partner was using a crutch, they offered us a room with a walk-in shower instead of a bath with a shower.

We were back on our way home less than 20 minutes after arriving. Outside, people were shouting and screaming, and both my guest and I felt unsafe and nervous in the area. The room was dirty and smelled damp, with a building site or farm-like area behind it, and the corridor smelled of smoke. Even the lobby felt unwelcoming and cheap. This place doesn't deserve even one star. I can't understand how it gets good reviews. I'm absolutely fuming, and wouldn't spend the money to stay here.

Once I was settled in, the place was fine for what it was. My single room was a decent size and had the usual things you'd expect in a standard hotel room. The staff were very polite and attentive, despite some communication problems. The building's decor and furnishings need updating, and so does the double glazing. Getting there gave me pause: the grounds looked abandoned, with a huge stretch of neglected parking in front of the former Zero 6 nightclub, which has been closed for a long time. For an affordable long stay booked at short notice, it's adequate. Just know that functions are held there too, so inconsiderate guests can sometimes make for a noisy night and disturb your sleep.
