The starter chef was incredibly welcoming, and the food at that stage was genuinely tasty. Sadly, things went downhill after that. I’ve eaten at plenty of fine-dining restaurants, so I feel reasonably able to give an informed, unbiased view. For £75 per person, I’d expect to leave comfortably full after five courses. My husband and I were both still hungry. It felt like the restaurant was trying to get as much value as possible while serving the smallest portions it could reasonably get away with. Bread isn’t even counted as a course in many fine-dining places, but here it was the only reasonably sized offering. It felt like a transparent way to fill us up while the other portions stayed extremely small. The Black Friday “deal” was a clever bit of marketing, fair play, it worked on me. £147 for two people sounds like a bargain until you learn the menu is £75 each at full price, so the saving was a grand £3. I tried to keep an open mind when we finally sat down, but we left hungry and frustrated. The lovely décor and friendly staff couldn’t make up for that. We’ve been to other Dean Banks restaurants, Dulse and Pompadour, and both gave us a much better experience for food and value. We won’t be back, and I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to friends visiting St Andrews.

Kay joined in the birthday fun and made the stay feel extra special. The team even left a card from the birthday boy, and everyone went out of their way to look after us. Our room was cosy and spotless, with a really comfortable bed and a wonderfully powerful shower. We also loved the five-course tasting meal at Haar. It was a midweek birthday treat, so the restaurant was fairly quiet. Big thanks to the chefs and the breakfast server, who shared some local knowledge. Highly recommend.

We booked a belated Valentine’s break with dinner, bed and breakfast, and it was a lovely weekend away. The room felt luxurious, and I really liked the artwork and decor. Dinner was great, and the staff were lovely throughout. You’re close to the beach and right by all the shops and bars in St Andrew’s town centre. We’d definitely recommend it for a special trip.

The rooms are on the small side, though the beds are comfortable. Breakfast tasted great, but there isn’t a huge choice. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the newly redone bathrooms look stylish and feel high quality. You can see the Old Course clubhouse and the sea, and the coolest pub is right next door. Even with the central location, we slept peacefully. Fantastic hotel, exactly where you want to stay.

The little “food map” was such a fun, creative touch, and the service was thoughtful all evening. When I asked for more bread, they kindly brought us another serving for free. I went to Haar for my birthday just before graduating, with my girlfriend. We’d had a huge argument earlier and nearly didn’t go, but the food was so delicious and creative that the fight seemed silly by the end. We made up and had a wonderful time. The flavours were excellent, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone visiting St Andrews.
