We were delighted with our stay at The Elms. Peter greeted us at the guest house with a warm smile, even though his left arm was strapped up because of a broken collarbone. The room he had available was in an outdoor Swedish-style log cabin, and it was clean throughout. The rate was also cheaper than the dreadful hotel we’d just left, The Countryman Hotel in Camelford. The whole thing began after we’d driven from Suffolk to Cornwall for a birthday treat for my wife Teresa. We arrived at the hotel we’d booked on 11 September and found it dreadful in every respect. The next morning, 12 September, its owner refused to refund the remaining three days we’d already paid for. With nowhere else seeming available after a lot of phone calls, I decided to cut our losses and search again. I found The Elms online and called Peter straight away. I explained what had happened and how upset Teresa was. He was about to go out, but said he could find us a room and would wait for us to arrive in St Austell. Peter even came to a local recommended pub and offered to buy us both a drink. Breakfast was excellent, and Mel helped Peter with the cooking and serving each morning. They were both very kind and friendly. I’d give this guest house 10 out of 10. Well done! The picture is of me enjoying Peter and Mel’s delicious breakfast. Yours sincerely, Stuart and Tersa Poole Date of stay: September 2020

Peter is a great host and knows a lot about Cornwall. The guest house is comfortable, with well-appointed rooms and a scrumptious Cornish breakfast. Its central position makes it easy to get around Cornwall, and Plymouth is only an hour away. I’d highly recommend staying here.

We stayed here every other weekend for a while, travelling from Kent, and Peter and Nuth always made us feel welcome and looked after. Peter's breakfasts were delicious, and the place felt homely while being spotlessly clean. The rooms, which I think were called Sweet Briar and Honeysuckle Suit, were quaint, comfortable and well equipped. We’d love to stay again if we’re ever back in the area.

We had a lovely few days at The Elms Guest house in July 2018. Peter was a fantastic host, and we were very comfortable in the well-appointed rooms. It’s a beautiful house, and breakfast was delicious Cornish food served in a lovely dining room. We’ll certainly visit again.

After driving for three hours, we found out our room had been double booked, and we weren’t happy. We made lots of calls but couldn’t find anywhere else, so we headed home. When I asked Pete when the other couple had booked, he wouldn’t tell me and just kept blaming booking.com. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place.
