St Merryn

The shower was perfect, and there were plenty of parking spaces. A nice gentleman was looking after the property while the owners were in France, and he was very helpful. The owner has put decking at the front, and the location is great. When we visited, the bar wasn't open and there were hardly any guests around. The hotel looks tired, and our room needed modernising. The window had blown and the walls seemed fairly thin.

I spent a fortnight enjoying the beautiful sea view from my window each night, and the value for money was excellent. It's much cheaper than several nearby places. There's no breakfast and the room isn't cleaned daily, but the owners explain that clearly from the outset. I appreciated how upfront they were about potential shortcomings. The coffee is really good, oat milk was provided, and the location is handy for public transport, with a supermarket right nearby and a lovely footpath to St Ives/Carbis Bay close by. I slept well in the great bed, and having a bath as well as a shower felt like a luxury. The owner was incredibly helpful, and the terrace is a lovely sunny place for a self-serve breakfast. The room internet was occasionally slow, as the owners had also mentioned. That's a small trade-off for such a restful stay at a reasonable price. I'd love to return to St Merryn.

The owner and her daughter were lovely and always happy to help, and all the staff were great. Tesco is only a few minutes away, with a nice pub an easy short walk from the property. We stayed four nights and absolutely loved it. It's also a great base for lovely walks to a couple of beaches. We'll definitely come back.

We liked it so much that we added an extra night instead of moving on to a campsite. The price was very reasonable, and Dawn was welcoming, friendly and helpful. Having the downstairs fridge-freezer was useful, and there's a pleasant garden with a bench and lawns. Nearby buses are good and reasonably priced, so after the long drive there I didn't need to use the car. The open-top bus ride along Cornwall's coast was great. One evening, the party from Bangladesh in the next room sounded like loud racing commentators or auctioneers, all talking at once. I wondered if the walls were thin, but I could have asked them to quiet down. Instead I drifted off imagining I was travelling the Indian subcontinent again. I mentioned it to Dawn the next day; the following evening they shared their takeaway with me, and I didn't hear them at all. Perhaps the walls weren't so thin after all. We had a lovely break and would happily stay again.
