Virginia Lodge

This is a great little B & B, about a ten-minute walk from the busy city streets. The owners and staff are lovely, chatty and knowledgeable about the area. Breakfast is great, with a nice choice that you tell the owners about each evening. The old-style accommodation is kept clean and tidy. My room gets four stars because of the older style and water pressure. The shower was a bit small too.

We stayed over a long weekend for a wedding just outside Stratford. Tim and his staff were so kind, and both the room and breakfast were exactly what we wanted. Tim even drove us to meet our taxi so we wouldn’t have to walk in the rain. I’d absolutely recommend staying here if you’re after a nice, homely feel.

The location was excellent, just a short walk into town, and there was parking. Breakfast was very good, with vegetarian options as well as cereal and toast, and the food was tasty with good service. I stayed alone for two nights in a clean, welcoming double room. The bed was very comfortable, and the curtains did a good job blocking the bright midsummer sun. The hosts were friendly and chatty without being intrusive. One thing to bear in mind during a heatwave: the building gets very hot, and without air conditioning the room can feel stifling. Mine was beside a busy road, so opening the window let in a lot of traffic noise. The en-suite was clean and functional, with a toilet, sink and shower. The plumbing meant the shower took a long time to warm up, never got very hot, and had only medium pressure. I’d stay again when visiting Stratford.

I’d planned to stay with Tim back in 2020 and finally made the trip this week. It was worth the wait. The location was excellent, everywhere I wanted to go was within a ten-minute walk, and I could come and go as I pleased. The breakfast was really tasty, and Tim was friendly and helpful. My room was gorgeous and full of character, with a stunning four-poster bed and lace canopy. The bed was so comfortable, and the cushioned window seat was lovely on sunny afternoons. I look forward to returning to Virginia Lodge, and couldn’t recommend it more! ✨
