The Compasses Inn

We were made to feel welcome, and the service was attentive. The food was fresh, local and delicious, with a wonderful menu. There were local beers and some interesting wines too. I could happily have spent the whole afternoon beside that roaring fire. Down a winding lane, in a lovely old building with low beams and wooden booths, this is how every country pub should be.

The food was a real highlight. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with plenty of breakfast options for most tastes. Dinner has a short menu because everything is prepared and cooked fresh. We met friends for a midweek evening meal and stayed overnight for B&B, and we'd definitely come back. Room 4 was up a short flight of steps and had windows on two sides. It was basic, but clean and warm, with a soft, comfortable bed and a good-sized TV. We liked the tea, coffee and infusions, the fresh milk and homemade cookie. The toilet room had a decent rain shower and plenty of toiletries. The ancient thatched pub has lots of character and sits in a lovely, quiet countryside spot, well off the beaten track. It was fairly quiet in mid-November, though we understand it gets very busy at other times.

We were staying nearby and just dropped in for a quiet dinner. The food tasted incredible, and the service was quick, attentive and great. The drinks list had a good selection too. The menu struck a nice balance, with enough choice for different tastes without feeling overwhelming. The inn is gorgeous, full of character, with low ceilings, beams and a log fire. It's in a lovely, quiet location, and everything felt in keeping with what you'd expect from a 14th Century inn. I'd highly recommend it for a meal. I imagine the rooms are just as high-standard as the rest of the place. I'd book dinner ahead, especially with a larger group. I can imagine it gets busy quickly!

I wish this place were my local. The staff are super friendly, and the food is delicious with lots of variety. Seeing all the plates go past gave me FOMO about the dishes we hadn't ordered. This country pub is simply outstanding, out-of-this-world amazing. I can only imagine how awesome Christmas Eve here would be.
