The grounds and Cliveden House itself are beautiful, and neither was the problem. I went for afternoon tea on my own as a treat, expecting to feel looked after. Instead, one waiter made me feel uncomfortable and hurried. I was still eating my scones and hadn’t touched my cakes when, before an hour had passed, he asked if I wanted them packed up. There were guests nearby who had been seated longer than me, and I didn’t see him approach them that way. I left feeling singled out and unwelcome. Another gentleman on the team was pleasant and attentive, and kept topping up my water, but the first interaction had already soured the visit. I’d hoped for a special, relaxed afternoon in keeping with the venue’s reputation. The service fell well short, and I went home disappointed.

We’d happily plan another visit. Cliveden House has a rare mix of history, comfort and beautiful grounds, and the people working there made our stay especially memorable. Everyone we met, from reception and restaurant staff to the gardeners, was warm, professional and keen to help. The spa is very well equipped, with indoor and outdoor pools and jacuzzis, steam rooms and places to relax. We loved the outdoor pool on a particularly hot day in May, with plenty of loungers and a peaceful feel. There’s lots of room to park, too, so arriving and leaving were easy. Our room was comfortable, and it’s impressive that many rooms in an old property like this have air conditioning. Some of the largest, more traditional rooms don’t, which is understandable given the listed building. The hotel also balances modern comforts with the character of the original house nicely. The setting beside the water, within National Trust grounds, is gorgeous for walking or just taking in the scenery. Breakfast was another highlight: attentive service, a lovely garden view, and one of the best cooked hotel breakfasts we’ve had. It’s a distinctly British stay, with history, luxury, grounds and service together in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere in the UK.

I went to Cliveden House for my friend’s birthday, hoping for a special afternoon tea. The service turned what should have been a celebration into one of my worst hospitality experiences. When I mentioned at the bill that I’d asked for a refill and it never came, the waitress replied, “Yeah, so?” She’d been dismissive and unprofessional throughout, and there was no apology or attempt to fix the missed refill. Mistakes happen, but how they’re handled matters. I’ve had afternoon tea at The Dorchester and The Ritz, so I know the sort of service I expect from a luxury venue. Cliveden House fell well below that, especially for its reputation and prices. I wouldn’t return or recommend it after this.

The location was handy for sightseeing, and the bed was comfortable. The room felt small, though, and its bathroom a little dated. Service was polite but lacked much warmth. For the price, the hotel left me a bit underwhelmed overall.

The birthday card and little treat were such a lovely touch, and they even kept offering us extra sandwiches. I was treated to Afternoon Tea at Cliveden House for my 30th Birthday, and the food was absolutely delicious. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. Jerry deserves a special mention for being funny, polite and wonderfully attentive. Thank you so much!
