Swan At Tarporley

The two waitresses were friendly and attentive, and we had no complaints about the food or their service. But a rare dinner out with just my daughter was spoiled by the way a small charge was handled. We’d travelled 10 miles from home to The Swan. My daughter asked for “just lettuce” instead of a Caesar salad and got a small portion of lettuce without the usual ingredients. She also thought it didn’t seem particularly fresh. We were charged £5. When I queried it, the waitress promptly lowered it to £2.50, which I appreciated, though I still felt that was too much for a little plain lettuce. I asked to speak to someone senior. The gentleman who came over, who I assumed was the manager, seemed reluctant to discuss it. He asked what I thought was fair, and I said £1. He refused, saying they’d provided what we requested and £2.50 was the price. I accepted that, but asked for the service charge to be removed. His reply was rude and sarcastic, leaving a very poor impression. What should have been a simple conversation about a minor bill item turned unpleasant, and after the manager’s poor customer service I’d think twice about returning.

I’ve visited The Swan at Tarporley socially before, but recently used the private event room upstairs for a dear friend’s funeral reception. The team handled a very difficult day with great sensitivity and care, and the service was second to none. The beautiful room, with its historic paintings and central fireplace, felt warm and intimate. It was private and serene, just right for family and friends to gather, reflect and share memories. I’m sincerely grateful to all the staff for their kindness and professionalism. They made a tough day a little easier.

The Swan has a welcoming feel, and we were greeted and seated quickly for our family meal. The food was hot and tasty, with plenty of choice. Prices felt fair for the quality, which was better than average pub food. I liked that local producers supply the place. You can buy their goods on site, including bread from a local bakery, and the Swan’s lovely cakes are available to take home. We enjoyed our visit and will return.

I stopped for a pint or two after cycling over to ask about their Sandstone Trail pub-to-pub walk. The Sunday roast was easily in my top 10 EVER, and I’ve had a few. It’s a gorgeous pub with really lovely people, fantastic beer and food. I’ll most certainly be back, hopefully to do the walk!
