The interior is lovely and cosy, but sadly the service was poor when we booked a Sunday table for 16:00. Menus were dropped on the table and then nobody came back or explained whether we should order at the bar. The table QR code led to a dead website, and when we went to the bar, the person there was abrupt. We ordered at 16:30 and our food still hadn’t arrived by 17:15. The roast vegetables were lukewarm, the potatoes soggy from being plated under the red cabbage, and the beef chewy and dry. The pork was delicious, and the children liked their triple-cooked chips, though they found the burger underwhelming. It wasn’t busy, so I’m not sure what caused the delay or bad service. When we paid, they asked if everything had been all right and politely told us we should have been informed at our table that orders had to be placed at the bar.

We were very happy with our stay. The room was spotless, with quality toiletries and a really comfortable bed. There were unexpected extras too, including a coffee machine, an iron and board, and an electric fan. Although the room was above a pub, there was little noise, and the location was perfect. Everyone we spoke to at the pub was helpful and friendly.

My wife and I are new to the area and had dinner here on Friday evening. The food was absolutely stunning, and the staff were exceptionally welcoming. After a very bad experience at another local pub that same night, the White Lion was a real breath of fresh air. I’ll definitely be back soon and hope to call the white lion my local. The room was amazing, spacious and had everything we needed. We loved the character of the old building, and there was a good selection of snacks to buy in the room, plus plenty of tea and coffee, including oat milk. We didn’t eat there, so can’t comment on the food. The central location is handy for everything in Tenterden, and the bar and reception had a warm, friendly atmosphere. The staff were really friendly and always available to help.

Lunch for four on Thursday 5th Feb 2026 was faultless. We had three pints of nice ale, a starter and sea bass for the main, which was lovely. Everyone’s food was good, the staff were nice, and there were no complaints. It wasn’t too busy either. Tenterden is a jewel in the crown.
