The Vale of York

Breakfast and dinner were both cooked just right, and the pub and rooms were spotless and comfortable. The owners had only been there five weeks, but made us feel very welcome. We had a great stay and would happily come back.

We both had more than we could finish. My fish and chips came with two fillets and chunky chips, while the Colonel's Vale slider had two thick burgers in a brioche bun with chilli cheese, bacon and salad, plus chips and a side salad. Neither of us left anything because of the quality, just the generous portions. Everything was hot, beautifully presented and worth the wait, even though they were busy. The menu had plenty to choose from without being huge or pretentious. We each had a pint of lime and soda, and the bill came to under £36. We'd stopped in on a whim looking for somewhere different, and had a quick chat with the guvnor on our way out. He said they'd been there around 18 months. They're doing a great job. It's a short walk south from the station and not far from Thirsk races, with rooms to let for visitors too. Give it a try if you're in the area.

Since reopening, it's felt like a proper local pub, with room for a quiet drink, a group, or a sociable evening. Football is shown on the big screens. I haven't tried the Sunday lunch yet, but it's on my list. Definitely worth a visit.

The bed was comfortable, but that was the only good part. The kitchen was filthy, with food from the day before left in the sink and spread across dirty worktops. There was no breakfast room set up, and the landlord was overlaid. I asked for a refund and got one. Avoid until they sort out the cleanliness.
