Muthu Royal Thurso Hotel

We’d heard the hotel had changed owners recently, and since we were only staying one night, its location seemed convenient. The rooms are dated but clean. The restaurant staff, though, were dreadful, rude and seemed to have no idea how to serve people. Dinner’s vegetables and chips were almost cold when they arrived. At breakfast, different girls served the tables with no real structure. We were given a full breakfast twice, but coffee and other things we asked for were forgotten.

The only good part was the gentleman at reception. We’d run out of options late in the day, so wound up staying here. The wait staff were rude and the food was barely edible. Whatever they call “steak,” it definitely didn’t seem to come from a cow. Breakfast was just as poor, with hardly any choice, and plenty of dirty dishes and cups. The price is okay, but it reflects the stay. Our bed sheets were stained and dirty, and some didn’t even fit the bed. The toilet ran all night, the tap leaked, and the shower handle kept falling off. The floor was unbelievably slippery, enough that anyone over 35 is bound to break a bone.

The staff were pleasant and helpful, and the room was clean with a comfortable bed. It’s only minutes from the beach and right in the centre of Thurso. It’s a quirky, old fashioned hotel with faded glory and Tartan carpets, but very reasonably priced. Read the other reviews and you’ll be miserable.

I checked out as soon as I walked in, it was too disgusting to stay. The whole hotel was filthy, from stained carpets and a dirty bathroom to large, visible urine stains on the mattress. The room smelled awful, and housekeeping clearly wasn’t cleaning properly. Avoid this place at all costs.
