The Robin Hill Hotel

We’d planned to leave Torbay, then changed our minds at the last minute and stayed an extra night. Robin hill had a room available, and the reviews looked promising. The price was much better than the big chain hotels, which for some reason wanted us to book two rooms for four people. Our room suited two adults and two children perfectly, with one double and two singles. It was comfortable and clean, and there were free bottles of water in the fridge. Soft drinks were available for a small charge. The hotel sits in what must once have been a grand house, in a more affluent part of Torquay. The harbour, town centre and theatre are all close, either on foot or a very short drive away. We booked breakfast the night before. The ingredients were excellent quality, with no cheap sausages or bacon. My wife had Eggs Benedict, beautifully presented and top quality. The children got fruit and chocolate crepes, and everyone cleared their plates. We’d happily recommend Robin hill and will stay there again when we visit.

Breakfast was a real highlight, freshly cooked and delicious, with a generous fruit platter, juices, pastries and other choices. The staff, especially Jessica, Helen and Vincent, couldn’t do enough for us. Jessica gave us a lovely welcome and our keys, and everyone made the stay feel special. The hotel is a beautiful old place with 150 years of history, and it’s kept very clean throughout. Our room had everything we needed to be comfortable. It’s close to the Marina, with lots of restaurants and bars nearby. There’s plenty of parking on the driveway, which is steep but manageable. We had a wonderful stay. I can’t remember the last time I stayed in a boutique hotel where the staff were so lovely. We’ll definitely be back. It’s one of the best boutique hotels I’ve stayed in, if not the best.

The manageress was fantastic, a real asset to the hotel, and we had some good laughs at the bar in the evenings. Breakfast is ordered in advance, which was new to me, but it worked fine. Everything was fresh, and they went out to buy what we’d requested. The chef’s attempts to get my wife’s boiled eggs just right had us laughing more than I have at breakfast in ages. Just to be clear, they serve breakfast but not dinner, and there is a bar. The hotel is well placed for the sea, bars and restaurants, and local buses to the attractions stop just off the main road. The outside could use some attention, but it’s a lovely old hotel and we’d go back.

Our host gave us a warm welcome and told us about the building’s history. We had lovely views across town, and our room had everything we needed for a short break. It was handy for the town centre, yet far enough away that we didn’t notice the busy weekend bustle. Breakfast was amazing, and all the staff were pleasant. We had a great stay at the Robin Hill guest house.
