The views over Porthtowan beach and the outdoor seating are lovely, and the location is easily the best thing about The Unicorn in Porthtowan. The meal, though, was a letdown, and I wouldn’t return or recommend it. There were four of us. One person had the vegan option, which was alright, and two ordered the sausage dish. I didn’t get the dish I’d ordered at all. The menu was already limited, and several options weren’t available either. The sausages were said to be locally sourced, but they tasted ordinary, nothing special. The mash was watery, and there was no mustard. Overall, the food felt poor value for money, as if they were just selling off the last of their stock at the end of the season instead of offering a proper meal. The place was almost empty, yet service was extremely slow and sometimes nonexistent. Staff seemed indifferent and uninterested throughout. Apart from the excellent setting, it was a very underwhelming visit.

The guy behind the bar was pleasant, so two stars. We waited over an hour for the food, and when it finally arrived, it was shocking. I ordered mussels and chips. The mussels were small and tasted overdone, and some tasted odd, so I stopped eating them. I had about 10 chips. The bread was shop bought, with no butter. Paid £24! They need to improve.

We stopped for a pint with our dog after a cliff top walk. Dogs are welcome both inside and out, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. There are some nice benches outside to sit and watch the world go by, though parking is limited. The choice of ales was limited and disappointing, although I did like the only ale on offer.

We were away for the weekend and stopped at the Unicorn for dinner. It was really busy, but Indie still kept checking in and was so friendly and polite, even while rushing around. Such a lovely person and a real asset to the team.

Sienna looked after us brilliantly. The roast was the best I've ever had, with tender pork and crisp crackling, plus huge Yorkshire puddings that weren't too crunchy. We also tried the sweet potato, mushroom and beef Wellington, which was delicious. Big compliments to the chef.
