Caledonian Hotel

We stayed for two nights at £80 per night, with breakfast not included. After arriving late and tired from travelling, we struggled to sleep because of the traffic, trucks and nearby ferry. The Caledonian Hotel sits right on the main road close to the harbour, so it was noisy at night. The room itself was clean, spacious and comfortable, with a modern stand shower. We didn’t use many of the hotel’s services, so I can’t speak to those. We did eat at the hotel restaurant on the second evening, though, and both the food and service were well below expectations. I wouldn’t stay here again. A hotel should feel comfortable and relaxing when you arrive, and this one didn’t. If I could have cancelled the second night without losing money, I would have checked out after the first.

The restaurant can get busy, but the rooms were a good size and worked well for us. The hotel is nicely situated and has free parking. I’d definitely stay again.

We really enjoyed staying here, and eating at the on-site restaurant was a pleasure. The food and drinks were excellent. Our room was on the small side, though that wasn’t a big deal since holidays aren’t usually about sitting in your room. What did disturb the peace at times was doors slamming repeatedly in the corridors. Soft-close mechanisms or clearer signs asking guests to be considerate might fix it. A great stay, with a few small things that could be improved.

The rooms were clean and tidy, but breakfast was very disappointing. We were there in plenty of time, yet there wasn’t much food left and the choices were minimal. The porridge was especially disappointing, just mass-produced pots you can buy in any shop. The young man on reception on 29/09/25 was the star of the stay, giving us such a lovely, warm welcome.
