We were holidaying in the area in our camper and called just 20 minutes ahead to book a table. We got a nice spot in the pub, with rustic decor and a real feel-good locals’ pub atmosphere. The waitress, who might have been the landlady, was very friendly. There was a great choice of drinks and food, and our order was taken quickly. We played one of the board games while waiting. My husband and I had pies, and wow, the pastry was delicious and they were full of filling. Our four-year-old cleared his dinner too. My only small suggestion is more comfortable chairs, but it wouldn’t stop us visiting again. Loved the 2p bar. Thanks so much, we wish we could take you back to Leicester!

The warm welcome made us feel at home as soon as we walked in, and then the food really impressed us. My steak was cooked perfectly, and the lamb shank fell off the bone. They’d run out of sticky toffee pudding, but the dark chocolate and honeycomb cheesecake more than made up for it. The girls were amazing and made sure we were happy with everything. We’d come from Manchester for a birthday, were staying elsewhere, and decided to go out for tea. We weren’t disappointed. I’d highly recommend it for a traditional pub meal, and I’d give it 1000/10 if I could.

Bobby Q provided great entertainment, and we had a wonderful time. The staff were good and the meals were great. My wife wanted vegetables that weren’t on the menu, and the chef was happy to make them. My steak and kidney pie with Stilton was the best I’ve eaten. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The shower and toilet were fine for an average-sized person, but at 6'6" and 115kg I had trouble with them. Being big can have its problems.

Good ale and nice food when we stopped in for a few pints midweek in February. We thought it was expensive, though I suppose a proper local pub in the middle of nowhere needs all the help it can get. Definitely recommend.

We booked a basic, good-value room for one night for three of us, after climbing old man of coniston and before heading home. It did the job: hot water, clean towels and clean sheets. We got there around 7pm and had a lovely fat burger and chips, five stars. Breakfast the next morning was banging, compliments to the chef. Friendly staff and good food. What more could you ask for?
