I've been coming to the Valley for meals for so many years I can't remember how long. The gammon this time was lovely, thick, well cooked and a decent size. A few more chips would have been nice, but that's a small thing. My fiancée asked for her burger without relish, but it arrived with it. The young man who brought the replacement meal was polite, friendly and couldn't do enough. He also brought my replacement soft drink and was pleasant throughout. I can't fault him. The service from the lady behind the bar was a different story. She seemed more interested in chatting with friends than helping customers. It was hard to get served, and when I tried to return my soft drink because the syrup had run out, she was talking to them again. When my fiancée went to ask about her burger, she'd gone up before another couple came in, but that couple was served first. Then she was told she'd have to wait because their food had been ordered first. It felt as if she was a nuisance for trying to get her food corrected. The woman seemed more focused on her friends and the other couple than on checking whether we were okay. The young man eventually brought the replacement and apologized, though mistakes happen and he didn't need to. After all these years, and even considering the Valley for a wedding meal, this was sadly my last visit. That young lad would be great at front of house. His manner was excellent. The lady shouldn't be the welcoming face of such a well established business.

We had a brilliant Sunday carvery with the family on 02/11/2025. We arrived around 1:15 and there were still plenty of seats in the large dining room, so booking didn't seem necessary. The locals were friendly and helpful, and the meal was excellent. There were three meats to choose from, plenty of vegetables, and everything was hot and fresh. At £14.95 each, it was very good value. Two people in our party used rollators or walkers, and the ramps on the steps made it disabled friendly. I'd happily recommend a visit.

A catch-up with a couple of friends was only meant to last a couple of hours, but we ended up staying for five and ordering food too. The staff were almost too friendly, in the best way, and that's what kept us there so long. We had to get a taxi home. Sorry, I didn't mean that offensively!

We've often stopped at the Valley Hotel for tea or coffee, and Sunday lunch when it was open, and had always been happy with the prices. Yesterday I was shocked to pay £3.15 each for a small tea and a small coffee. That's far too much. I know there's a new machine, but I object to being charged for it this way. We enjoyed popping in for a cuppa and a chat, but sadly we won't return while prices stay so high. Pubs may be struggling, but that doesn't mean they should rip off customers. There are hardly any people in during the afternoon, so you'd think they'd want to keep those who do come in during the quiet time. It's a shame. I hope they bring the prices down. Until then, we'll go somewhere else. So sorry.

Most of the staff were friendly, but the rooms all need some attention because of small damp patches. I took a photo of a glass that had only had milk in it, and it was heavily stained. There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor for non-residents. However, staying there isn't disabled friendly: there are no ground-floor rooms or lift, and there are plenty of stairs. I emailed to ask for a downstairs room or a lift and didn't get a reply.
