The staff were friendly and polite, and our room was spacious with a lovely sea view. But the hotel itself felt very worn and didn’t resemble the website photos. In the bathroom, paint was peeling, limescale marked the shower screen and bath tiles, the towel rail pulled away from the wall, and the bath stand and radiator were rusty. Under the sofa looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in ages. The dining room also had peeling paint along the skirting boards. It badly needs renovation. Breakfast was another disappointment. The included continental option was a small, ordered-from-the-menu meal rather than a buffet, and hot food cost extra. Our fruit plate had one strawberry, two small pieces of watermelon, three thin slices each of honeydew and pineapple, plus a tablespoon of yoghurt. We’ve stayed at three-star hotels where both a continental buffet and hot breakfast were included. For the price, this place doesn’t deliver, and I wouldn’t even rate it three stars right now, let alone five.

We’ll be back to celebrate our anniversary. We got married two years to the day after our engagement, which happened at The Hambrough during a surprise weekend on the Isle of Wight. Emily was my girlfriend then, and Gio and the team helped make the proposal and the whole stay special. The food, drinks, room and hospitality were all perfect. Thanks again, The Hambrough comes highly recommended.

The staff were superb and went the extra mile to meet our needs. We also had a great breakfast. The hotel was clean and comfortable, and the location was excellent. Highly recommended.

Both balcony rooms were beautiful, with plenty of space, comfortable beds and everything we needed. Sitting outside in the morning and evening was so relaxing. Breakfast was delicious on both days, and all the staff made us feel welcome and well cared for. We had a wonderful stay at The Hambrough and would love to return.

Friendly, professional staff helped make our stay more pleasant, but the hotel didn’t feel worth £150 a night or like a five-star property. The room was small, with mould around the windows, and breakfast wasn’t included. Instead of a buffet, it was served à la carte. We’d also been looking forward to eating in the restaurant, but later found out it was closed because the hotel had lost its chef. Between the room condition, extra costs and missing restaurant experience, the rating and price felt unjustified.
