The Crown Inn

The old pub is beautifully kept, and our room was lovely and comfortable. We slept really well, and fresh towels were provided each day. Staff were friendly and took time to chat even while busy. We had a delicious home-cooked meal on our first night, then found plenty to choose from at the self-service breakfast. A live band happened to be playing on our last evening, which kept us entertained. We felt welcome as soon as we arrived for our two-night stay. It made for a very relaxing weekend, and we hope to come back.

We'd happily recommend the inn and would stay again if we're in the area. We were visiting for a wedding at Crockwell Farm the next day, and arrived around 8:30pm. A staff member had reassured us by phone that they could rustle something up even if we were late, and Claudio greeted us warmly. The chef, who we think may also be the owner, made us a lovely dinner, although it was probably after serving hours. Our compact room had what we needed, though a chair, more shelf space, and some hangers would've helped. The narrow stairs to the upper rooms are part of the old coaching inn, so tall guests and anyone who's had a few drinks should take care. Breakfast was self-service, with plenty of continental options and a few extras, within the limits of what the facilities allow. The Earl Grey tea was very nice, but we liked the Cafetiere coffee less. It was a thoughtfully put-together spread.

Dinner was a highlight: the fishcakes were tasty and the Sea Bass cooked just right. The room was nicely furnished, with a very smart bathroom, and the village was peaceful. There was a pleasant feel to the place, with a few people outside enjoying a summer evening drink. A great place to stay, and I'll definitely go again.

After a long walk, we stopped hoping for a refreshing drink. Outside, a woman was chatting and said hi as we headed to the bar. We waited for ages and rang the bell, but nobody came. We assumed they were busy and didn't mind at first, then the same woman came in. She was the barmaid. Leaving us waiting that long so she could chat outside was rude. I don't expect perfect service in a village pub, but basic manners matter. We've been here before and had great service, so hopefully this barmaid was the exception. Today's visit was really disappointing.
