For £125 for the week, including a self-service breakfast, this was good value compared with other rooms in Wellingborough. The new owner has started renovating the place, which seems to be aimed mainly at contractors.

The room was clean, but getting to the top floor meant climbing far too many stairs. There was barely any decor beyond chipboard, and the shower room was still under construction. The door locks looked as if they’d been broken into, and the area felt very intimidating.

No one was there when I arrived, and the so-called breakfast was just very cheap food in opened boxes, left out to help yourself to, and stale. Then, after I left the key where I’d picked it up, I was told it couldn’t be found and that I’d be charged £10 for it. Terrible.

The couple who now own Canberra guest house are fantastic, and the owner is a really friendly, nice guy. It’s peaceful at night and a very pleasant place to stay. The shopping centre and train station are both about a five-minute walk away, which is ideal.

They were so helpful about arranging a stay at short notice, and the service was friendly and accommodating. Very clean, with great hospitality. What more could you want?
