The Stables at The George

There’s plenty of parking, but the pub only serves drinks, no food. The room was very basic and so small for a double it felt more like a single.

The pub is attached to the building and has a great atmosphere. We had a lovely night’s stay for a lovely price, and the staff were so welcoming. Our room was warm and nice, with a cute tea and coffee station and all the necessities. No body wash or shampoo, but that’s no big deal if you bring your own.

The Stables has the usual tired, slightly odd feel of rooms above a pub, and it was cheap and cheerful in that sense. We hired rooms 4, 5, and 6, and they were all different. Room 5 was the best, more spacious and with a large window, though oddly it had no wardrobe. Room 6 was a little bigger than 4 but felt cramped because a big wardrobe took up most of the floor. Room 4 was a stuffy box with just one tiny window up in the eaves, about the size of an A4 sheet, so no view or fresh air, and I’d worry about getting out if there were a hallway fire. All three bathrooms smelled of mildew, and the showers and sinks looked like they hadn’t been cleaned properly in a while. The rooms generally seemed grubby. Free WiFi was advertised in every room, but the listed network didn’t show up when we scanned from several devices in different places. The biggest issue was the B&B sign on the front wall, since no breakfast was offered. When we asked, we were sent to the nearest Asda.

A lovely little pub, with friendly staff and a warm, cosy feel.
