For this rather jaded Londoner, it was a welcome little gem in the provinces. There’s a great restaurant attached, though I would’ve liked a few more meat or fish mains. Nothing else to fault, and calling it two stars probably undersells it.

The rooms are above an Italian restaurant and have the feel of an inn or B&B. They’re pleasant, but you can hear every creaky footstep, especially from a first-floor room, so earplugs would help. The restaurant noise carries until around 11pm, and you have to weave around waiters coming and going through the building. It might be a nice gesture to offer paying guests a drink or a small discount, as some hotels with restaurants do. The building has a lot of history and is attached to Brown's Gatehouse, though I’m not sure whether one of the rooms is actually inside the gatehouse. It also overlooks the cathedral.

The location was great, and the staff were helpful. It’s a lovely place to stay, though our room was cold when we arrived. The heating only came on shortly before eight in the morning, so it was chilly at first.

The four-poster bed was impressive, and the room was comfortable. Staff were really friendly, and breakfast was very nice too.
