The Sheep and Penguin

We found plenty of parking a two-minute walk away, at a very reasonable price. Throughout our stay, the service was friendly and welcoming. The room was excellent, tastefully decorated and well equipped, with quality tea and coffee and fresh milk in the fridge. The bathroom was just as well appointed, with some nice features, and the lovely comfortable bed meant we slept well. There was a good choice of ales and wines, plus a cocktail menu. The food was great, with classic dishes alongside some inventive new options, and the portions are generous, so arrive hungry. Breakfast was continental, good quality and full of nice little touches.

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we walked into The Sheep & Penguin, and the whole team stayed warm and helpful throughout. Their attentive, thoughtful service made everything relaxed and memorable, and nothing seemed too much trouble. Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed. The location was just right, a short walk from the centre of Wells. Many thanks to everyone we met. We’ll certainly come back sometime.

The food tasted great once it finally arrived, but the service was terrible. We got there at noon on Saturday, and the restaurant was empty. Ordering was handled well, then we waited and waited. We were the only table for about 20 minutes; another table arrived, and 20 minutes after that we still had no food or explanation. When it did come, part of the order was missing. The burger arrived ten minutes later because of an “emergency,” and no one apologized. I’ll find another pub next time I’m in Wells.

Our room and dinner made up for the issues, and I’d recommend the place. The bedroom and bathroom were fantastic, very clean, spacious and well presented, with a comfortable bed and a lovely bath. Dinner was superb, and the pub was nicely decorated, had a good atmosphere and was well placed in Wells. But there was no heating in the rooms or at breakfast. We stayed two nights, and the room wasn’t cleaned or the bed made. At £175 a night, that was disappointing. Breakfast was okay, not brilliant.
