The Wellington

The fish and chips were a highlight, crisp and beautifully cooked, with a fantastic tartare sauce. The ribeye was juicy and tasted great too. In London, I often find steaks disappointing even when they cost over £100, so it was nice to get such a good one here at a reasonable price. We had a really enjoyable meal, and next time we definitely want to try the Wellington.

We booked the whole hotel for our wedding at The Barn at The Rose and Crown, and the staff did an incredible job accommodating what we needed. The rooms are all lovely, full of character and very reasonably priced. We also enjoyed the breakfast and the wider food menu. The Wellington is a wonderful pub and hotel. We’re looking forward to coming back for years and reliving memories of that special weekend. Highly recommend.

We had lunch at the Wellington with a friend, and none of us noticed any signs saying we had to register our car. There was no keyboard at the bar, and the staff didn’t mention it. Ten days later, a £100 parking fine arrived. The website says parking is free, so this was a very unwelcome surprise. Places like Premier Inn and Harvester ask for your registration when they greet you. That’s proper customer service. Being told about it upfront would have avoided this. Very poor service. You might want to go elsewhere, or you could end up paying more than the tip they added to the bill.

I’d been to the Wellington many times before and always loved the food and atmosphere, so this Sunday late lunch was a letdown. The Spicy Korean Cauliflower bon bons were hard, with no real spice, and my Mushroom and Truffle Risotto was bland and underseasoned. I couldn’t make out either mushroom or truffle in it. I heard there may recently have been a change of chef, which could explain the difference. I hope they settle in and the food gets back to its usual high standard.
