I really appreciated being able to check in as soon as I reached Whitby. Angela messaged in the morning to say my room was ready, rather than making me wait until the afternoon. The key and the parking tokens were in a safe box, with clear instructions for opening it. Communication by text and email was thorough, and queries got quick answers. I didn't see Rob or Angela, but I didn't need to. I was in single room Room 5, which had the usual guesthouse amenities, was clean and tidy, and felt comfortable. It looked out over St Hilda’s church. There's no shower, as the booking information makes clear, but after the Great North Run I was glad to have a lovely warm bath to soothe my legs. The water pressure was amazing and it filled in minutes. I had a lovely two-night stay during my trip to the Great North Run. Angela and Rob are wonderful hosts, whether or not you see them, and I'd happily book at the Captain’s Lodge again.

After a long day walking the Cleveland way, I was glad to have a bath rather than a shower. As a solo traveller, I also appreciated the clean, spacious room and comfortable queen-size bed. The breakfast menu had an excellent range, and everything was delicious and served with a smile. It's a great location, quiet at night, and about a 10-minute walk from town. I found parking easier on West cliff. It costs £9 for 24 hours, and the ticket can be used in most car parks in the area.

Angela and Rob are available if you need them, but otherwise leave you to do your own thing. If you'd rather choose your own places to eat, this is a great option. It's clean, comfortable, inexpensive and ideally located for exploring Whitby. A perfect way to experience the town, highly recommended.

The rooms are very comfortable, and many have a sea view. Ours did. There seemed to be endless tea, coffee and biscuits for the room, and the cooked breakfasts were amazing, with healthier choices available as well. Angela and Rob were kind, generous, helpful and friendly hosts. I'd happily recommend the Captains Lodge to anyone visiting Whitby, and we'll stay again on our next trip.

We stayed for two days and really enjoyed it. The location is great, the cooked breakfasts tasted amazing, and the owners were so nice that we had a lovely chat with them. I don't know what washing powder they use, but the towels and bedding smelled lovely. I'd recommend staying here.
