The beds were really comfortable, and I slept well, but there were a lot of problems around the stay. We booked two nights for my 30th birthday, and of the Wetherspoons hotels I’ve stayed in before, this was the worst. Check-in was messy: no one showed us to the hotel waiting area until 2pm, so we were left waiting in the noisy, overwhelming bar. At first, they couldn’t find our booking, and the key cards sometimes didn’t work. The rooms are separate from the bars, so there’s no lift access, which isn’t great if stairs are difficult for you. The WiFi was unlimited but so slow I had to switch to mobile data. The TV only had radio and news, and the bath tap kept dripping. Food was quite good, though app orders took a long time. Staff seemed to spend more time chatting than serving, and all the tables were sticky. The old decor made the pub feel run-down. The surrounding area didn’t feel much better to me either, with rude people and a rough feel.

We waited 20 minutes for our table service order, with no food or drinks, then found it sitting at the bar when we went to check. When we asked why it hadn’t come to the table, a young staff member said he wasn’t allowed to serve alcohol, but nobody else had picked up the order. Staff were chatting among themselves instead of looking after customers. It was a really flat experience, and I won’t be back.

I’ve been to over 500 Spoons, and this one is among the three worst. I can’t rate the hotel, only the pub. I’ve had bad visits at two others, the moon and spoon Slough and one in southhampton, but this place was just as bad. There were lots of empty tables, yet I waited 15 minutes for a drink while I was the only person at the bar. The staff seemed too busy talking to locals. The noise was so bad that people at nearby tables were shouting to each other. I moved tables several times, and even had to take my hearing aids out. I’m not old. When I played music on my phone and it went quiet, I was told to turn it down. That was my point, there was no need for all the shouting. Everything I asked for to eat was unavailable. I ordered the cheese melt, which I’ve had before and liked, but this one was a joke. I think they were out of cheese.

The Korean chicken was very good quality and came piping hot. Others in our party had fish and chips, which were cooked well, and the food and service were consistently good on both of my recent visits. The staff were efficient and polite, including the new barman handling the bar on his own. After some disappointing experiences at Gloucester dock and Bristol park street, where I felt weatherstones had gone downhill, this WSM place was a welcome change. Cabot court is in a fabulous spot, with lovely sea front views from the front and side of the building, and it’s well placed for the town. It was excellent value for money, and we’ll definitely return on our future visits to Weston super mare. My mum in law had a slight tumble, and the staff were attentive and checked she was okay. I haven’t stayed overnight, so can’t comment on the rooms. A worthy five stars.

Count me in for the Wednesday get fat fast die young pizza club. For a tenner you get a great choice of meat and cheese topped sourdough oven baked biscuits, plus a drink. And there’s curry night tomorrow, you say? 🤔
