The biggest letdown was breakfast. We had the classic breakfast and porridge. The porridge was thick as mortar, made with water and tasteless. I asked for honey, but the small sachet didn’t help, so I left it. The blueberry muffin was stale inside and tough, though it had been microwaved to warm it up. The yogurt, fruit cup, and croissant were fine. I asked for brown toast and got white, with no condiments, just hard butter straight from the fridge. There was barely any hot water in the canteen, old coffee in the filter pot, and no coffee cups. On the first morning, I asked for toast and it never arrived. Maybe staff were busy setting up for a wedding? I booked because I’d stayed before, though that time was room only, and because the hotel is near my son. His girlfriend’s parents stay there and had said the food was good. The location, parking, and night entry are handy, but the food really lets the place down. Room 110 is a decent size with a good super-king bed, but there were plenty of problems. The carpet was filthy and the bathroom tired and in need of a good clean. There was a crack down the left wall, already there when I stayed in this same room last November. Black mould in the shower grout could be treated with bleach. The towel radiator didn’t work, even after I tried the outside switch both ways. The desk lamp was broken too, even after I tried other outlets. BBC 1 had no sound, just as last year. A fold-out luggage rack would help because the desk is pushed up against the hangers, and I wasn’t about to move furniture. More hooks on the wall or alcove near the door would be useful as well. Tea, milk, and sweetener weren’t replenished during Sunday’s room clean. I got back close to midnight, when there was no staff around to ask.

We booked while visiting Brooklands, just a short drive away. Our room at the back was quiet, and we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner. Prices are typical for down south, unfortunately, but it was a pleasant stay.

The family room was great, comfortable, and the food was top class. From the moment my partner and I walked in, the staff were amazing. Fraser deserves a special mention for looking after our every need from arrival until we left. Everyone we met was pleasant and helpful. Can’t wait to stay again.

The room was bigger than I expected, with a huge comfortable bed and a bathroom with a good shower. The bar felt welcoming, the food menu was fantastic, and the staff were efficient and friendly. It’s a great hotel in a good location and very good value. I’d definitely choose it again.
