The Royal Hotel

The location is great, and the waiters and bar staff were good, but management left me annoyed. We had booked first-floor single rooms near the stairs, yet were given second-floor rooms, with one not near the stairs. When I asked reception to move us to what I'd booked in November, the manager wasn't interested in finding another arrangement and said they hadn't received the first-floor request. My friend is 91 and terrified of lifts, so she had to climb 42 stairs to her room. This hotel isn't suitable for people with mobility problems.

I stopped by around 8pm a couple of days ago to ask about the area. I didn't get her name, but the young receptionist with long reddish hair was so friendly and helpful. Really warm service, and a credit to the team.

I'm writing for my mother and her partner, who stayed here in late August. After breakfast one day, they came back to their room to get a bag before heading to the shop and found it open, with £200 missing. The door had been locked, so they believed staff were the only others with access. At reception, staff were extremely rude and asked my mother, who is not forgetful, whether she was sure she'd had the money. The police opened a case. Back in their room, they learned another family along the corridor had also lost a substantial amount of money. The hotel did nothing to investigate and categorically denied staff could have been involved, even though nobody else had access to the rooms. If you don't want your holiday ruined in the same way, keep your cash with you at all times.

We had a spacious sea-view room upgrade, and it was worth it. The food was nice too. It's a beautiful, well-kept old hotel in a great location, and the old-fashioned entertainment was great. Very happy with our stay.
