Breakfast was still pretty grim the next morning, even though the smell had eased a little. The night before, Room 2 smelled like pub extractor fumes were being blown straight in through the window, and the washing machine upstairs made the room shake every time it ran. The staff said they wouldn’t use it again that night after we reported it. Check-in was friendly, at least, and the building exterior looked like a 1970s council estate that had given up. The bed was lumpy, and the attached pub smelled of bleach and public toilets, so we turned around and left. Come on, Whitehaven Premier Inn, do better. Go see how Premier Inn Cockermouth manages it.

Ben and Carol were so kind, especially when we needed a room at the last minute after a disastrous campsite stay. They found a safe place for our 21ft motorhome and booked us a table at the Brewers Fayre. When we came back from dinner, there was a birthday card, drinks, and chocolates waiting in our room. It was my birthday, and that was such a lovely touch. The room was clean and pleasant, the bed really comfortable, and nothing seemed too much trouble. We’ll come back next time we’re in the area.

The rooms were okay, but the carpeted hallways need a deep clean, and the place gives the impression that standards have slipped. The restaurant was a real letdown: our chicken wings weren’t cooked, and it was closed on 28 February.

The staff we met were very nice, but this was the most worn Premier Inn I’ve stayed in. It wasn’t awful, though the little touches were missing. The room hadn’t been restocked, so we had to ask for towels and more tea supplies. The extra pillows weren’t in a sealed pack, so we couldn’t tell if they were new, and there was rust around the bathroom taps.

It was busy at the hotel, but our room stayed nice and quiet. The location is handy just off a main road, with free parking and a pub serving food on site. The rooms may look a little dated, but they’re spotlessly clean, and the welcome is always friendly.
