Don’t let the fact that this is an old hotel put you off. I got a lovely welcome, and the whole place was spotless. I’ve given four stars because my allocated room, No15, had no hot water. When I mentioned it at reception, they immediately offered me another room and said I could move whenever I wanted. Maybe I’m being harsh. The staff are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. I didn’t eat in the restaurant, as someone had recommended a local fish and chip shop, which was well worth a visit. The bar was clean and pleasant, and the young lady serving was really nice. My room was absolutely spotless, with a lovely view of the river Wick flowing beside the hotel. I couldn’t have felt more comfortable, and I’d definitely recommend staying here. It’s well placed for the town centre or for touring the roughly 20 miles to John-o-Groats or Thurso. If I’m delivering a vehicle in this neck of the woods again, I’ll book at Mackays.

We only stopped in for lunch, not an overnight stay, and had a lovely time. The staff were so welcoming. We’ll definitely come back.

That sticky toffee pudding is still on my mind. We were recommended the place by the owners of Wick River Campsite while travelling the NC500 with our 13-year-old springer spaniel. Although it was fully booked, the owners found room for us in the bar for drinks and dinner, and everyone was lovely. We both ordered lamb, which was delicious, made with high-quality ingredients and presented like something from a top London hotel.

The restaurant food was the best part of our stay, and the room was clean too. Everyone on staff was friendly. I’d definitely recommend staying here if you’re in Wick.

Our room was comfortable and clean, though its window banged all night. There was a storm, so that may have been why. We stopped here on the first night of our NC500 trip, enjoyed a delicious dinner and a decent breakfast, and found the staff very friendly. We’d stay again.
