We go to the King Alfred every Sunday, and sometimes more often. Ali and the front of house staff are always warm and welcoming, with fantastic food and drinks. The whole experience has never let us down. Poppy, our maltipoo, knows a good pub and gets apoplectic at the mention of going to the KA. Can't recommend it enough, it's fantastic every time.

We couldn't believe our luck finding a room in this fabulous old pub. Ours was quiet and beautiful, with a comfortable bed. We ate downstairs twice and were so glad we did, the food was excellent, the beer was good, and the atmosphere was lively, with people of all ages. The historic neighbourhood is within walking distance of the city centre and major sites. Service was very friendly, and the host was brilliant. Cozy comfort and a quirky feast for the eyes. We'd return tomorrow.

That Sunday lunch was the perfect mix of great company, delicious wine and seriously good food. The beef was perfectly cooked and pink all the way through, with a mountain of delicious vegetables and the best gravy I've had in a pub Sunday roast. I can't speak highly enough of the King Alfred. Thank you so much, Ali. We're lucky to have this place. It was my first time there, and the late Sunday lunch showed me what a brilliant pub this is and what an asset it has become to the community. The atmosphere was welcoming from the moment we walked in. Ali and her 5 star team looked after us beautifully, from the first sip to the final goodbye. Their professionalism, attention to detail and lovely manner made the whole experience a pleasure.

We stayed Saturday night and would definitely come again. They let us into the room early, which was extremely handy, and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. The room was perfect and the bed comfy. There was tea, coffee, a small fridge with milk, water and yoghurt for the morning, plus muffins and granola. They provided a parking permit. Lovely pub, nice outdoor area and very handy for town. Looking forward to staying again.

The prices were £19.50 for the fish and chips and £26.50 for the seasonal fish. I understand food inflation, but please don't use it as an excuse to take advantage of people. Use clean, fresh oil and put more food on the plates at those prices. We came to a food pub, not a fancy or Michelin star restaurant. Some might say I didn't have to eat there, and I agree, but I wanted to try it. The result is still the same as years ago, trading on the name and location in Winchester. The fish and chips had thick, burnt batter and tasted of dirty oil. There was just a teaspoon of dried mushy peas, flavourless tartar sauce with chopped gurkins and mayo, and packet chips. The chicken with risotto was a tiny breast, more likely part of the chicken wing, wrapped in bacon, with risotto underneath. I forgot the price. The seasonal dish was pan fried trout with potato in creamy sauce and four pieces of asparagus.
