The inside of the pub is cosy and welcoming, and we had a great view of the cathedral. Staff were very accommodating with gluten-free food, even bringing me my own GF gravy boat. We came for the Sunday roast, and it was sensational. The beef brisket was so tender it melted in my mouth, with a delicious selection of vegetables and crispy roast potatoes. Definitely worth a visit!

We went for lunch with friends visiting from out of town, and we could see the Cathederal from our table. Two of us had the Sunday roast, one had Seabass and one chose the Steak and Ale Pie. Everything was delicious, perfectly cooked and hot throughout. The staff were delightful, friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We’ll definitely return. 5 🌟, thank you very much. 03Jan26. A fabulous old pub in central Winchester, opposite the Cathederal.

A table booking ahead seems wise, as it gets quite busy, especially at weekends and over Christmas. The location is handy, just across from Winchester Cathedral. We had dinner: a chicken burger and pork ribs with mashed potatoes. The chicken breast was juicy, topped with cheddar, and came in a bun that was much tastier than a standard burger bun, though I’m not sure what kind it was. The ribs were just as good, full of flavour and perfectly cooked. Service was attentive and helpful the whole time. We had a great meal.

Bradley gave us a lovely welcome for our one-night stay, and our room was fabulous, with a view toward the Cathedral. We had salmon from the specials and very tender lamb stew for dinner, followed by spotted dick and cheesecake. Breakfast was basically a full English, with fresh juice, toast and tea, and it was brought to our room the next morning at no extra charge. The food, service and general ambience were superb. For a top-class experience in a location second to none, you must come here. Highly recommended!

We booked ahead for Sunday, which was necessary because the restaurant was full. I had steak, and my partner chose the pork shoulder roast. Just so you know, the roast has one meat and one vegetable option, and I think it changes from week to week. Both dishes were delicious, the portions were large, and service was quick and friendly. We also shared a lovely bread and butter pudding.
