Harte and Garter Hotel

The location is the only good thing about this hotel, and that’s why it gets one star. The reception feels unwelcoming: there’s now just a desk in front of what used to be the original reception desk, and the staff did little to make us feel welcome. Hazards are everywhere, from a lift that doesn’t line up with the floor to frayed carpets and rugs with curled-up corners. The room windows were dangerous, with broken panels and cracked frames. The radiator didn’t work, and the little electric heater did very little to keep out the cold from windows that wouldn’t close properly. There’s no bar or restaurant, and the plastic plants and foliage don’t hide how badly the place needs a complete refurbishment.

The rooms are a decent size and well maintained, and the staff are professional and attentive during your stay. This well-located hotel has a vintage, almost royal feel. It’s in the heart of Windsor, opposite the castle and right by a whole area of shops, restaurants, and bars. You won’t be disappointed.

The stained glass along the corridors is a lovely touch, and the hotel’s location is hard to beat, right by the central train station and across from the castle. Our room was spacious, the bathroom was lovely, and the bed was very comfortable. I appreciated having a decent hairdryer for a change. The one thing that needs fixing is the bathroom tap, which kept dripping. We were concerned about all the water being wasted. I’d happily stay here again in Windsor.

The staff were okay and the location is right in town, but there’s no hotel parking, and the place itself felt absolutely bare-bones. The rooms are dated and simply horrendous. There’s no restaurant, bar, or any of the usual services you’d expect from a hotel. I’d rather have met my friends and driven straight home. I wouldn’t pay more than 20 for it. Avoid it and find a lovely Airbnb or a hotel with parking.
