The kitchen was grimy, with uncovered, undated dishes of jam, something white and crusty in another dish, and bread that had been bought reduced and was five days out of date. The owner denies there was a problem and says the fridge was full of provisions and everything got eaten. Breakfast was another letdown. Because the caretaker was ill, we were told at check-in that we’d have to make our own in the morning. That was a bit odd but manageable, except there weren’t enough provisions for a full cooked breakfast. We had eggs, cornflakes, a long-life croissant, bread, jam and butter to choose from. We’d asked two weeks in advance about checking in early and leaving our car for an event nearby. That was refused, so we agreed to check in late instead. When we arrived earlier to drop off the car as arranged, we were asked to be shown our room, but no time had been set aside for that. The owners weren’t there during our stay, yet later complained they’d lost sleep waiting up for us while they were on holiday. All we needed was a six-digit code and directions to the room. It’s a shame the self-check-in advertised on Airbnb wasn’t provided, since that would have avoided the whole issue. The room was clean except for a dirty bathroom door, which you can see in the pictures. The owners flatly deny that too, even though they weren’t there. The bathroom curtain was broken, the advertised tea and coffee facilities and mini fridge were missing, and we had one hand towel and one small towel between us. Each issue on its own wasn’t awful, but together, and with the owners refusing to see any problem, it left a very bad taste. I’m sure I’ll get an aggressive, defensive reply. After an Airbnb review, we were accused of leaving the bed dirty and mucky in retaliation. If you’re unsure what to believe, the photos and other reviews speak for themselves.

The owners were welcoming and friendly, and breakfast was good. The room was off the living room, which felt a little strange, and the property and room were quite dated. A noisy fridge sat about one metre from the bed. The room door didn’t lock. Ray, the owner, told us not to worry because they were always there, but nobody was around when we got back from dinner at about 10pm.

Breakfast was excellent, with both a full English and continental options, and the room was spotless, with a large TV, double bed and en-suite. The outside of the B&B looked a little scruffy and untidy, possibly because building work was going on, but once inside I forgot about it. The surrounding area was lovely, and the B&B sits on the edge of a small village. Ray gave us a warm welcome for our one-night stay at Shiralee. If you’re after a hotel setup, this probably isn’t for you, but you may enjoy it if you like a quirky, friendly B&B.

The hosts are lovely and clearly know the local community well. Winterslow is a lovely village, and Shiralee makes a convenient base for Salisbury and Stonehenge. It’s a unique B&B, though the decor is quite dated and they don’t provide things like shower soap. On sunny summer mornings, the breakfast greenhouse can get exceptionally warm.

The basic cleanliness and breakfast were fine, but staying here felt strange and unfriendly. The owners seemed quite paranoid. They didn’t give us a key to get into the B&B, there were several CCTV cameras in the public areas, and signs on the bookshelves warned us not to take books. Neither host seemed to want guests staying there.
