The Jug & Bottle

I was happy to linger at The Jug and Bottle in Heswall. The place has a warm, relaxed feel, quietly confident without being showy, and strikes a nice balance between feeling special and somewhere you can unwind. I had the fish pie, rich and comforting, with plenty of well-seasoned fish. It seemed made with care and wasn't drowned in sauce, which can happen with fish pie.

We had a very enjoyable Sunday lunch at the Jug and Bottle in Heswall. Parking was limited, and even the nearby paid lot had only a few spaces. The atmosphere inside was welcoming despite being lively, and there was live music from the other side of the bar that added to the relaxed feel. We booked online expecting a crowd, and were glad we had. A friendly man at the bar greeted us, then a waitress showed us to our table. Drinks arrived promptly and we ordered. The Sunday roast beef came with cauliflower cheese and stuffing wrapped in pancetta, alongside a chicken burger and fries. After a reasonable wait, everything looked appetising and tasted just as good. One roast had fewer vegetables because of a personal preference, but it was a little disappointing that no extra roast potatoes or carrots were offered instead. We shared the glazed lemon tart to finish, which looked excellent and tasted it too. The team were friendly and attentive, and the food was very good.

This was our second visit this month, and the food was outstanding again. My wife chose the snapper and I had chicken, both restaurant quality rather than ordinary pub grub. Great service, a cosy spot and a good beer selection. Our local favourite.

Our travel plans changed, so we decided at short notice to eat here and stay overnight. We had a great time, especially enjoying the Sunday roast, which was excellent quality and served hot. There was good live entertainment, and the staff were attentive and professional. We'll definitely be back soon.
