We were still kept awake until around 2:30am by shouting, loud music and the pool table clunking, even though the pub officially closes at 11pm. Our room was right above it, so sleeping was difficult. Bring heavy duty ear defenders if you stay. The area is lovely, and the hotel’s location was brilliant, convenient and a great base for the “Clarkson tour”. The pub itself was okay and had a nice atmosphere, breakfast was good and the staff were friendly.

We had a great two-night stay and absolutely loved it. The staff and locals made us feel so welcome, with a real community spirit. Thank you!

The cooked breakfast was excellent, though the evening meal we had was mixed. We stayed for three nights at this picturesque inn, whose oldest parts date to the 12th century and whose bar dates to the 17th. There are six rooms. Ours, room 4, was nicely decorated and comfortable, but the window has slats across it, so there’s no outlook. The bathroom towel rail didn’t work, and the mirror was just propped behind the sink. The atmosphere also felt a bit strained. Some background music might have helped, as would a better kitchen extraction filter.

Rooms were clean and nice, the full English was banging, and a walk through the village to the Tar lakes made a good day even better. My co-pilot Merlin got lots of fuss and cuddles and loved it. Andy and his team are the real deal, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. It’s genuinely dog friendly, with good beer and food, an open fire, pool and darts. It has everything a pub should, and really feels like the heart of the community. All you poncy “bistro” pubs I stay in should visit and learn how it’s done. We’ll come back again and again. Highly recommended.

We watched the Rugby World Cup here and enjoyed the friendly customers and good atmosphere. It’s a great pub to stay in, with a good choice of beers and comfortable accommodation. We’d definitely come back.
