The Fleece

A lovely little pub at the nice end of Witney, with a great feel inside and out in summer. The food is spot on, especially the Sunday roasts. When we went, they came round offering more roast potatoes and veg. I’d recommend it. This review was made in connection with a toast promotion.

We’ve been to The Fleece several times but hadn’t eaten there before. The food was really good and tasty, though the plates were cold. Our waitress Fia was amazing, so cheerful and friendly, and knew the menu inside out. Nothing was too much trouble.

The whole lunch was very disappointing, and I definitely can’t recommend it. Twelve of us came to celebrate my mother’s 96th birthday, with the food preordered. Only half the meals arrived together, then most of the rest took another 10-15 minutes. The rare steak was the last dish and took about 30 minutes. The pork belly arrived cold. After we sent it back, it came back lukewarm. Chips in two meals were undercooked, and the chicken in the Chicken Milanese was overcooked. We had to ask three times for the dessert we’d ordered in advance.

The menu was very good and interesting, and Thiia gave excellent service. It was a shame the toilets were in such a state. In the disabled loo, the tiles were badly cracked, the wallpaper was peeling, the toilet paper dispenser didn’t work, and there was a very unpleasant smell. The gents’ toilets were in a similarly disgusting condition. The chef and serving staff worked hard to deliver an otherwise excellent meal, so the state of the toilets was upsetting. We told the manager, who smiled and seemed disinterested in what we said. Disappointing.
