Connaught Hotel

I stayed here again the other week and the room had improved a lot. The refurb is coming along, and I was happy with my room tonight too. For a budget price, this is amazing. Parking is included in the room cost, unlike at other budget hotels.

The room was filthy, with mould you could see in the shower, marked carpet, a broken window handle and no toilet brush. The sheets were too small and kept pinging off the bed all night. The whole building felt damp and smelled bad. Fire doors were propped open, which felt unsafe and is against basic fire safety rules. I booked this as a surprise for my partner and his father so they could spend time together. What they found was nothing like the pleasant hotel shown on Booking.com. The listing said there was a bar, a café or restaurant serving from 7am, and a proper lobby. There was no food or drink, no bar and no café, none of those advertised basics. On arrival the place looked more like a building site than a hotel. After a 7½-hour drive, they got there at 8pm expecting to eat at the advertised restaurant, only to find there was no food at all. £120 for one night there is outrageous. The online listing completely misrepresents the place, and it shouldn't be advertised this way. If negative stars were possible, I'd give them.

The pillows were yellow and hard as bricks, and the TV was fuzzier than the morning after a drunken night out. I don't know what they renovated, but the decorator might as well have been Stevie Wonder. The carpet looked like it had come from the Chernobyl reactor zone, and the whole hotel smelled of depression. The view was a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It felt like a home away from home if you'd just escaped Alcatraz. We stayed just long enough to book another hotel. 10/10 do not recommend.

They kept my £50 deposit after I forgot it, then I got seriously ill and had to go to hospital. I'm not from Wolves, and they made me send proof I was in hospital before I could get the deposit back. At first they lied and said I could get a bank transfer, then I couldn't. The manager was extremely rude, with a twangy voice, you'll know who he is. He then offered me a free night in the hotel, which is a hole and isn't cleaned properly. When we went with friends and needed more rooms, they also tried to take my £80. They said only two people per room, so we decided not to go ahead with the booking. Disgusting.
