B+B York

We'd definitely stay again and recommend it. It was very good value, with a warm, clean room of a good size and parking at a very reasonable price for York. The staff were friendly and impressively efficient; it was a pleasure seeing the team work so well through a busy breakfast shift, much better than at many big chain hotels we've tried. Breakfast had a decent range, and the city is about a ten-minute walk away. Spot on, and better than a lot of places we've stayed.

The rooms were exceptionally clean and comfortable, and the price was amazing value. I had to leave before breakfast service on both mornings of my two-day stay, but the staff went out of their way to sit me down for a lovely breakfast each time. They were incredibly helpful. I can't recommend B&B York enough.

The hotel's location is excellent, and all the other staff we met were friendly. Even so, the stay was disappointing, and I wouldn't recommend it or return. The rooms are very basic and mediocre at best, with rotting window frames and poor, dirty bathroom sealant that clearly needs renovation. Breakfast was a letdown too. There's no buffet, just a very limited menu. The porridge was the only option that seemed even somewhat healthy, but it was extremely plain and came without fruit. When we asked for some, we were practically laughed at, so we brought fruit from the supermarket ourselves on the following days. There were too few breakfast tables for the number of guests, and a stressed, unfriendly staff member kept rushing us out while we were still eating so others could sit down. She didn't greet us in the morning or welcome us to breakfast, just barked, “Room number?!”

The location was perfect, and we found you can move the car onto the street for free on Sundays after the paid parking ends at 11:00 AM. The included breakfast tasted good, but the servings were tiny. Its 8-10 AM window felt like a way to limit how many guests turned up, and we skipped breakfast on our second day to eat elsewhere. We paid another £30 for parking when the receptionist asked for it at the start, bringing the total to £100 a night. At that price, we expected more from the room. It was in a separate building at ground level, old and dingy, and needed maintenance. Other rooms and the car park looked straight in, so we kept the blinds shut the whole time. The bathroom heater ran on a timer for only a few hours a day, which was odd and uncomfortable. Skipping toiletries to “save the planet” also felt laughable, and it seemed the owners were trying to maximize profit and cut corners at every turn. These quirks might have been easier to accept at a fairer price, but better value is available elsewhere.
