The food was reasonably well presented, but it arrived a bit cold and had a slightly rubbery texture. The menu is limited, mostly seafood with only one or two meat choices, and the specials barely changed what was already listed. Staff were sullen and spent much of the time gossiping at the front. They brought our mains without clearing the starter plates, let empty glasses pile up, and we had to go to reception to get someone’s attention for the bill. We skipped dessert. The place is very overpriced for what it offers: food prices are sky-high even for York, drinks are exorbitant, the wine list is uninspired and hideously expensive, and there’s an automatic 10% service charge. That might make sense with great food or amazing service, but this was a below-average eatery. All six of us left disappointed.

It all comes down to what you think is good value. The food is well cooked, but the portions are tiny, so the meal was over almost as soon as it began. My starter was three beautifully cooked scallops, each about the size of a two-pence piece, arranged on hot rectangular slate with a tablespoon of purée and a few tiny beetroot slices. It took two minutes to eat and cost £14 with service. The main was a four-inch circle of steak, as if cut with a pastry cutter, plus about an eggcup of potato, for £26. Our meal for two, two starters and two mains, with only water to drink, came to £90. York has several restaurants with similar quality, realistic portions and prices around 60% of this. Rustique and the excellent new Cote are two obvious options. There’s a lot to say about this restaurant, but “pretentious” would probably show up in most of it. I’d get on your bike and try those other places, and send the BB a clear message to take a good look at itself.

We went for my daughter’s 21st birthday. It wasn’t cheap, but the food was really good and worth the price. It’s not an everyday kind of place, but it worked really well for a special occasion.

I love this place and took my parents there every time they came to visit. The food’s really good. They serve the bread rolls in a plant pot with a bulb or roast green garlic.

I went here on a date, and the food was amazing. We shared the mini desserts, which I really liked.
