Hotel Roomzzz York City

I was really chuffed with the location, cleanliness and service on my first Roomzzz break. The apartment had all the essentials: toaster, hob, oven, kettle, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, iron and board, and hairdryer. It was great to control the heating myself. The small gym had the basics, including a treadmill, bike, cross trainer, kettlebells, medicine balls, bands, mat, dumbbell rack and bench, plus a water cooler and TV. There are several places to sit in the entrance, with some books to look through. You can buy ready meals, longlife milk, crisps, juice and other basics from the fridge and freezer, as well as fresh ground coffee and cakes. Just a heads-up: the hot drink setup doesn't have fresh milk, and they don't sell it, so you can't make a perfect Yorkshire Tea. It would help if the website suggested alternative car parks for when the hotel's lot is full. We struggled to find one with poor phone service, and some local car parks don't allow overnight parking. We used Barbican parking, which we'd been to before, and it was a pleasant 14-minute walk. I'm really impressed with our stay in York and would highly recommend it. We're already looking at our next Roomzzz break.

We had a spacious, comfortable room with a lovely big bed, and the shower was good and easy to use. We didn't use the kitchen, though it looked like it had everything for cooking. There were plenty of parking spaces when we arrived, and the receptionist was lovely and friendly. The hotel is beside a lovely canal, nice for a daily walk, though our window looked out over a caravan site. It's about a 15-20 minute walk into the city centre. They don't serve breakfast, but there was a free coffee machine with hot chocolate that tasted amazing, plus complimentary croissants to take in the morning. We tried to check in at 2pm and were asked to pay an extra £10 for checking in an hour early. If the room is ready, I don't see the point of charging for that; it felt like they were just trying to get more money. The reception has lots of seats and toilets you can use if you don't want to pay for early check-in. There were random clicks and other noises in the room through the night and morning, which kept my partner awake, and we could hear people walking above us. A fire alarm also went off at 7:30 in the morning and disturbed our sleep. I'm not sure why, as there was no drill or emergency. Even so, we'd stay again. The hotel was good for what we paid.

The peaceful setting made it easy to get into York city centre while keeping away from the noise, and the hotel was very clean with extremely comfortable beds. Our stay at Roomzzz York was good overall. One staff member seemed a bit abrupt, which affected the experience, and the toilet leaked with cracked sealant. I reported it to reception and was told it would be fixed, but it wasn't sorted during our stay. The comfort and location were highlights; following through on maintenance and being more consistent with how guests are treated would make the stay better.

Everything I needed was in the spacious room: twin hob, microwave and oven combo, fridge with a small freezer compartment, iron and board, hairdryer, power points and USB outlets. The TV was good and screen casting worked. The bed was comfortable. The shower was good overall, though the overhead one was a little underpowered; the hand spray was strong. Recycling seemed well handled, as guests were encouraged to sort their waste.
