We had room 51 in Chaplins House, and it was perfect, really spacious. The ladies at the bar and the front desk staff were all top notch. The hotel has loads of character and quirks while still feeling lovely and modern. We were only there for 2 nights, so skipped eating at the hotel and spent as much time as we could in the city. It’s less than 10 minutes’ walk from the centre, yet quiet enough to relax at night. We’ll be back for a longer stay, and I’d strongly recommend it.

The birthday treat ended up being really upsetting. My husband had booked 3 nights for my 60th birthday as a surprise, and had emailed the hotel directly for months to make sure it would be special. He booked an executive room on their recommendation. We arrived 2 says before my birthday, but nobody mentioned it. Room no 59 was huge, with high ceilings and a large bathroom, but unbearably hot. Turning down the radiators made no difference. There was NO air conditioning or fan, and the windows, covered in cobwebs and so stiff we could only open them a fraction, seemed not to have been opened in years. They opened right onto a footpath on a road. We asked to move, but were told they couldn’t offer another room of a similar standard. The alternative was a tiny attic room with a minute bathroom, but at least it had air conditioning. We had no other option, so accepted it. Nobody acknowledged my birthday or apologized for the room situation. We heard other guests being given free upgrades when they checked in, which added salt to the wound. We did get the extra cost of the original room refunded, but only after we fought for it. This was not the birthday experience we should have had.

The bath drain had a slightly funky smell, probably fairly normal in an old building, especially on the ground floor. Otherwise, we were really impressed. Our room and bathroom were huge, the biggest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in, and the staff were kind and helpful. It’s ideally located for York, with the city centre a 10-minute walk away. We’d definitely stay again if we visit, and highly recommend it.

The peaceful feel of the Middletons Hotel had us wanting to come back as soon as we left. My husband and I spent the weekend there, and the spotless room, comfortable bed and pillows, and fantastic food all made it feel like a warm hug. Special mention to Poppy, who was lovely and attentive.

We had a lovely time with my youngest son and his lovely wife. Our host was friendly and attentive, and made us feel like special guests. There was a choice of drinks, and the spread was great, with tasty warm scones, jam and cream, and sandwiches: salmon and cream cheese, cheese and pickle, and ham and mustard. We also had macaroons, Victoria sponge, chocolate sponge and chocolate orange ganache. Earlier, we’d bought a YO1 Middleton's afternoon tea voucher for four. The gentleman who served us was welcoming and professional despite being busy, and we really appreciated that. The fresh, tasty finger sandwiches were ham and lettuce, cheese and pickle, and salmon and cream cheese. Warm fruit scones were especially good with jam and cream, and there was a lovely cake selection including macaroons, brownies and other cakes. A very nice experience as a couple or with friends. Many thanks to our host and waiter for making us feel valued.
