The Black Swan

A real historic gem with a lovely atmosphere. There are lots of small rooms and little nooks instead of one big open space, and the upstairs function room hosts a regular folk music club. The service was friendly and good. I thought the prices were on the high side, though not too bad. I didn’t eat here, but what I saw the waiting staff bring out of the kitchen looked excellent.

The pub has a lovely old-world feel, and the service was good. We enjoyed our dinner. I had the vegetarian pie and fries, which were delicious, while my husband ordered the sweet potato curry with rice. He liked his, but preferred mine. Dinner orders have to be in by 8pm. We ordered at 7:45, so we couldn’t get dessert.

A nice historic pub, with three Yorkshire ales on tap and a good range of lagers. We had the loaded fries and giant Yorkshire pudding pizza, both good value.

Despite all its history, I wouldn’t recommend eating here. We came around 4.30 on a Saturday and half the menu was already sold out. The curry of the week was minced beef with curry powder, more like cottage pie filling than a curry, and the chicken and ham pie was very dry. The large Yorkshire pizza tasted like Dolmio pasta sauce with cheese on top. The Yorkshire puddings were so uniform they seemed frozen, probably Aunt Bessie’s.
